How Mindfulness heals global crisis? Only in several years, we have been facing with the globally unstable situations such as the bombing in Sri Lanka, protests in Hong Kong, world-wide Coronavirus disease, Russia-Ukraine war and recent China-Taiwan tensions. Almost all countries have been financially affected by the Covid-19. Approaching this situation, Fouts’s article published by Forbe (2020)[1] raises a solution to stabilize the economy with mindfulness practices. As a coach working clients amidst the global crisis, she described how threatened of life and worried of loss that came to people’s lives. She guided them the calming practice in line with mindfulness technique in order to detach oneself from every day’s problems. In another interview, Boyce (2011)[2] focuses on the healing power of mindfulness and discusses with distinguished experts such as Jon Kabat-Zinn, Daniel Siegel and Susan Bauer-Wu – those have practiced and taught mindfulness in the West for years. The critical role of mindfulness can prevent “stress, early diagnosis, and making healthy lifestyle choices” – says Bauer-Wu. Also, Daniel Siegel adds that “the mindful way of being supports a healthy mind and more empathic relationships”. Jon Kabat-Zinn thereafter addresses the “breaking down” of current healthcare system in the US caused by the fact that people “need more participation from the people who are suffering”. Interestingly, mindfulness – a technique introduced to the US hospitals in the 1990s by Jon Kabat-Zinn “isn’t all calm and peace”. Rather, mindfulness practices “uncover dark and difficult thoughts”. Daniel Siegel explains this mental process with the concept of the unconsciousness that holds negative mental states (i.e. fear, anger, cheating, sadness), which will come up on the surface of conscious zone while practising mindfulness. The negative thoughts and feelings are recognized, mediated and transformed in the mind. People with depression will benefit the most while encountering with ugly parts within themselves in order to re-fresh their current moment. The healing process, as Kabat-Zinn noted, leads to wisdom and clarity. In this regard, Bauer-Wu couldn’t agree more with an emphasis of gaining insight to resolve some of dysfunctional states that lower well-being. In summary, garnering expert views in this very brief writing proves the benefits of mindfulness practices amidst the global crises. How we put mindfulness into daily practice and how we learn insights depend on each individual’s journey and efforts. While mindfulness can heal our negative mental states during crisis, one can also choose to end crisis permanently if cultivating enough the 10 paramis – which is another topic only for the Buddha’s disciples looking for the absolute freedom. The teachings of Buddhism are wide and deep, mostly for aspirants who wants to abandon their suffering ultimately. Nevertheless, in these days of global crises, utilizing Buddhist-deprived practices for peace and unity is also beneficial for any human being.
